Postpartum weight loss is possible
One of the first thing women think about after giving birth, aside from how precious and beautiful their newborn is, is how soon they can lose that all of the baby weight. Society in part is to blame for this, I mean seriously, you see these celebrities who are pregnant, and it seems like a month later they look just as good as they did before they got pregnant. Looking at how fast these women get their pre-baby bodies back makes many ordinary women green with envy. However, let me let you in on a little secret, what they are doing to their bodies is not good. These celebrities usually begin dieting too soon after giving birth, which is not healthy at all for a new mom.
If you have just given birth to a precious bundle of joy, the last thing you want to do is put your own health at risk. Dieting too soon is dangerous because you are reducing the number of calories that you are consuming, which also reduces the amount of vitamins and nutrients your body is getting. Not getting the right amount of vitamins and nutrients creates all sorts of problem, including decreased energy and reduced milk supply. If you plan to diet after your baby is born, it is recommended that you wait until they are at least two months old.
Another problem brought on by these celebrities who look exactly the same as they did before they got pregnant is unrealistic weight loss goals. As a new mom something that you need to be aware of is that your body probably will not return to it’s before baby state. Getting down to your exact shape or even weight can be nearly impossible due to all of the changes that your body has gone through. In fact, many women find that their bellies are often softer than before, hips are a bit wider, and their waistline is bigger than before. While it is fine to set goals about losing weight you want to set realistic goals, which means coming to terms with what real women look like after having babies, not what celebrities look like.
One subject that comes up no matter when you want to lose weight is exercising. It is a well-known fact that in order to lose weight you have to get active. Now after having a baby you are not going to want to jump into an intense workout, but there are plenty of programs that you can follow to help kick-start your weight loss. After your baby has hit the two month mark, which also gives your body some time to heal, the best thing you can do to start losing weight is to eat a little bit less than you normally do and get moving, even a simple brisk walk around the block is better than sitting at home doing nothing.
Finally, what you need to remember is that when losing weight after a baby you do not want to drastically reduce your calorie intake, which is what many dieters tend to do. As a woman you need to have at least 1,200 calories a day to feel normal, if you are breastfeeding you need to up that to 1,800 a day. Doing anything less can trigger mood swings and increase the odds of you feeling worn out. For many women 1,200 to 1,800 calories a day doesn’t seem like much, so they tend to skip meals. This is not something that you should practice as it doesn’t work and can actually work against you. Numerous studies have been done that show eating breakfast helps get your metabolism going for the day. In fact the National Weight Control registry shows that 78% of woman who have lost around 66 pounds and have kept that weight off for at least 5 ½ years ate breakfast each morning, and they lost the weight gradually.
